What's the Debian based Zentyal equivalent?

Asked by [ Editor ] , Edited by Fernando C. Estrada [ Admin ]

Once upon a time (before being known by its current name), Zentyal was a very promising product based on Debian.

Unfortunately, at some point the developers behind the product decided that it was best to base the product on some derivative instead of Debian, and currently it’s not possible to deploy Zentyal unless you’re willing to switch to some distribution that isn’t Debian.

So considering that this kind of solution can be extremely valuable for small businesses (specially those that have no permanent IT staff), I was wondering: what’s the Zentyal equivalent for Debian?

Some additional notes (in hope of being able to get better answers) :
  • Yes, I realize that Zentyal is “just” a web interface for setting up and managing standard sevices such as Samba. And yes, I know how to set up a samba server by hand (i.e., without additional configuration tools)
  • I’m not looking to develop a Zentyal alternative. It’s a project that was developed by a team of several programmers over the course of more than 5 years (a quarter million lines of code according to ohloh metrics). I just want to know it there’s something like that, made for Debian, and ready to use.

We are currently working on Debian packages and hopefully will be released soon.

Can I take this as an official comment from the Zentyal developers? If that’s the case, it would be really great news! Debian definitely needs something like Zentyal.

Well, after some more digging, I finally found something that seems to be a true Debian-based Zentyal alternative: OMV (OpenMediaVault).

There are some demo videos on the product's website, and I must say that it looks truly impressive.

Unfortunately, there's just a "little" problem: OMV hasn't been released yet. It seems that the developers adhere to Debian's philosophy of releasing when it's ready (so that could mean anything, from a couple of months to a couple of years).

So unfortunately, for the time being OMV is "vaporware" and I must keep looking for other alternatives.
