if you install debian only on one system, you might prefer to download the netinst (http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst) version of debian (lenny is a specific debian, the stuff below works for all debian versions i know about), it is about 130-180 mb. it will install a very basic debian from where you are able to choose the applications of your needs. the rest debian will do for you. if you install on more than one system, you might prefer to download all DVDs, which enable you to install debian on systems even if they are not connected to internet (or slow conection)

If you download each of the DVDs to install on one machine: first use the first DVD to install a minimal system: unselect everything except for the base system

Reboot.

Put in DVD number 1 and use

apt-cdrom add

to register the packages on it.

Repeat for DVDs 2 – 5 (or whatever the highest number of DVDs for your architecture is).

Having done that, you can then

apt-get install gnome / apt-get install kde

If the software you need is not on Disk1, then the system will prompt you for the correct DVD.  Once you’ve done the install to your liking

dpkg-reconfigure apt

and set up to pull in packages from the network mirrors.

aptitude update ; aptitude full-upgrade

will give you an up to date picture

Repeat

The DVDs contain ALL of the software packaged in Debian.   If you download them, you will download far more data than you need, so on a slow connection take far longer than you really need to.

For a single system it will be faster to download the netinst CD, and then download and install only what you want from there.

Additionally I think the CD and DVD images are organized by reported frequency of the packages being installed, so you may be able to simply have a friend with a fast connection only download the first CD or DVD and get most of what you want.    Please remember Debian is a volunteer organization and bandwidth is not free.  Downloading excess data costs bandwidth – both to you and Debian.    There are over 25,000 packages available in Debian.  Most of my workstations have only 1,000 to 2,000 installed.
