VFAT mounting options

Asked by

How to set up options for mounting a specific VFAT external drive with utf8,shortname=lower options ?

I have a photo camera for which I need these options, but I do not want them for all VFAT disks like my pendrives.

It sort of depends on what desktop environment you are using, cause there are different mechanisms standing behind it. If you are using Xfce, for example, you may try to use Gigolo (very nifty little app which makes mounting different kinds of devices fairly easy). On old GNOME, which was using gnome-mount + gnome-volume-manager, you could just right-click on device and set flags in options window. Nowadays, where GVFS + devicekit is used, it’s not that easy (if not impossible, but I’m not 100% sure) — this would mean, that you will need to set these settings in /etc/fstab for this particular camera.

It is not the answer I expected, it is the one I feared :)
