Realtek RTL8188CE

Asked by

I have a new Toshiba portable fitted with a Realtek RTL8188CE wireless network adapter. It is not practical to change the adapter or to discard the computer. Is there someone out there who can explain how to enable support for this device?

Thank you for your comment. Yes, I found this page and had to read it several times before realising that the RTL8188CE is not supported by the kernel currently included with version 6 but only with version 7. Accordingly I tried installing version 7 Wheezy but fell foul of a bug in the installer (mentioned in several posts on this site) which causes it to fail when detecting network hardware. Eventually after much fruitless searching I came upon http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/ (also mentioned in postings) which provides modified installation disks including later kernels and drirvers. The disk squeeze-custom-i386-0315.iso worked perfectly and so I now have a computer in working order and will not have to find an alternative distribution. Thanks to Mr Muto and to the contributors to this site and others.
