Is there a wiki page which lists "needs help" wiki pages?

Asked by [ Editor ] , Edited by Luis Uribe [ Admin ]

Debian wiki is quite a mess, and I wonder if there’s a co-ordinated effort to improve it. Sure there must be good pages, but the majority is sub-standard. Is there a wiki page somewhere titled along the lines of “these pages are in desperate need of improvements”? It would particularly be useful if page hit counts for these pages were included so that we know which pages are of higher priority.

I haven’t seen that many “sub-standard” pages yet and if you encounter one, why not improve it as you use it? That way you’ll only pick pages that are used (at least by you) and you’ll only pick pages where you actually know more than is listed on the page (after doing research to solve your problem).

First of all: it’s a wiki! so if you want to help out improving its content, well, you can just do that :–) In most cases, it’s redundant to ask “can I help?” if you can at the same time just go ahead and do that. Please consider that your help is welcome.

Regarding your specific question, there is an introductory page, which gives various inputs on how you can help with the wiki, including editorial documents.

If, on the other hand, you would like to coordinate “big” changes which will affect many many pages, then it’s wise to check the contact page and in particular the webmasters (both pages are linked from the one above). But remember, the basic rule stands: “just do it”.

The Webmasters though aren’t responsible for the wiki. It’s seperate services and seperate teams, and currently I’m not aware of any overlap within the two teams. :)

While “Just Do It” applies, many people feel intimidated and don’t know where to begin. It may help if there was a clear and simple “please help”, “how to help” and “to do list” page that people could follow.

Personally I love wikis and think they are great, but I think the raises a valid point, lots of people find them confusing, and are unwilling to edit pages. I run a wiki at work and put lots of useful work stuff on it, some people will point out errors to me but not edit the page – even though there is a big “EDIT” button and I constantly tell people to edit anything they see as wrong.

I don’t know why people won’t interact with wIkis, my local LUG wiki is great but very few people use it, and a neighbouring LUG’s wiki was replaced by a Drupal CMS because of low usage of their wiki. Both work and the LUG’s are fairly technical user communities but in both cases editing uptake has not been good though many people are happy to consume content.

Looks like you are raising a general point “against” wikis, rather than one which is specific to the Debian wiki. As the specific “please help” page, I believe the introductory one I’ve linked to from my answer does fit the bill. If you disagree that it is explicit enough in asking for help, I’d be glad to hear back from you (even better, you can improve that page directly; pun intended :))

You are correct, I feel that there is a general reluctance for people to edit wiki pages, however as you point out that puts the onus on me – as a wikiphile – to try and help others use the Debian wiki.

Looking at the Debian wiki specifically I don’t think it is bad, but that is not to say that it cannot be improved. I’m just not sure how yet and if I have sufficient time to commit to it myself.
