Every Linux distro hangs on install for me...why, god, WHY?!?

Asked by

I’m trying to get Debian itself installed in dual-boot with Win7.  Every Linux distro I have tried so far doesn’t seem able to even start the install, just hang.

I have tried the acpi=off, nomodeset tricks.  Have tried various versions of Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora (just to see if it was a Debian thing or not).  Identical result whether attempting via CD boot or USB boot.  Interestingly, identical result whether attempting install or launching live CD versions.

I am catastrophically new to Linux but I have a bajillion years of experience with Windows, PCs, etcetera and am a quick study with these things.  This one, though… yeah.  Kickin' my ass from here to next thursday.

Help me, Debian-wan Commubity.  You’re my only hope.  :(

(Attached is a pic of one of the failed Ubuntu attempts.  All of the Ubuntu attempts looked like this.  The straight-up Debian installs are just a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the bottom left.)

Tell us more about your computer. Does it have a Make and Model? If not, what are it’s basic specs.

A black screen with a flashing cursor is often a video card problem. Do you know what video card you have?

Mobo: EVGA 122-YW-E173-RX (nForce 750i)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo (Conroe/E6850)
Video: Nvidia GTX 560Ti (PNY)
Sound: Razer Megalodon (USB Headset, unplugged during install attempts, onboard sound disabled in BIOS)
Only USB devices plugged in during install attempts are Razer Naga mouse (USB) and Logitech G15 keyboard (USB).

In my own digging, I have found numerous examples of people having trouble installing with Nvidia cards in their systems, so I’ve been assuming that’s the deal for me, as well.  I’ve tried all of the related tricks I’ve found but none of them seem to make a lick of difference.  Unfortunately, I don’t have another video card to drop in, either.

sigh  Why does Linux hate me?  Does Linux wish me to suffer through the impending Windows 8 cataclysm?  weep

Have you tried text-mode installation (from netinstall or businesscard)? If so, did lead to exactly the same error message? If you didn’t, try to use unetbootin to create image on USB stick and also make sure, that you chose testing version (cause I assume you already have tried the stable ones).
