Debian shutdown hangs

Debian with GRUB installed properly. Boots up fine, no problems. However, on shutdown from the system dropdown menu, the menu at thethe bottom right of the desktop or using Ctrl-Alt-Del, the shutdown process hangs at deactivate swap ... Can anyone help?
