Hi, now we have established that you have a 64-bit processor and you are running a 64-bit kernel it’s time to answer your question.

    1. Virtually all the software you will need is provided for you by Debian already compiled for you in 64-bit mode. It will be installed automatically when you need it by the normal apt-get/aptitude tools.
    2. 3rd party software, such as Flash, Opera or Chrome comes in 64-bit versions so you can install that without a problem.
    3. Some software is only available in 32-bit versions, and this can be run on a 64-bit processor via a chroot or using the ia32-libs.
    4. If you have lots of RAM (over 4 GiB) you do not need a bigmen or PAE kernel, as this is just a hack to the 32-bit kernels to allow them to access 4 GiB of RAM or more, the 64-bit kernel can access more than 4 GiB of RAM natively and much faster than any of the hacked 32-bit kernel.
